A gangster had been murdered. Witnesses claimed to have seen the victim in a heated argument with his neighbour before he was found dead. The police promptly arrested the suspect and found the weapon in his home, but the suspect firmly denied the killing. Feeling sceptical about the details of the case, the patrol officer who was responsible for investigating the murder privately commissioned Sherlock Holmes for help.
