　　遼闊的海洋上，有一座美麗的島，但島上的樹木被居民砍伐來造屋、建船，久而久之，島上的林木都消失了，土地變得非常乾燥。島的北方有隻大鱟，每當大鱟呼吸吐出氣息時，島上就一片飛沙走石，成了一座風沙島。

　　人們飽受風害之苦，於是來到王爺廟請求神明來解決。村民得到王爺的指示後，在村落的入口，各設立一座「風獅爺」來鎮風。

　　風獅爺不負眾人的期待，與大鱟歷經幾次對決鱟，終於收服了大鱟，但牠卻有話要說!!連一旁的喜鵲媽媽都跳出來替大鱟說話，究竟大鱟有什冤屈？風害真的是大鱟所造成的嗎？風獅爺又該如何解決？風沙島的前途將會如何發展呢？

　　嘗試著以民俗角色作為創作主題的作品為數不少，但劉如桂可以說是其中的創新者，從劍獅系列開始，她便不斷的從民俗文化中提取素材，巧妙將他們揉雜在一起，並賦予新的意義。而這本風獅吼可以說是她另一個層次的創作，不僅有民俗更結合了生態，創造了憨厚的風獅爺與無辜的大鱟。書名取為《風獅吼》正是結合了風獅爺與大鱟的讀音，並且巧妙地呈現出風獅爺一聲巨吼鎮攝四方的威武。

　　故事中的風獅爺個個造型逗趣，又有不同法寶，書末附有詳細的民俗知識解說，讓孩子更了解風獅爺，提供更深層的閱讀樂趣。
