Antonio Pérez Henares refutes the absolutism of the Spanish Black Legend in this magnificent historical novel, recreating the fascinating life story of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, the Spaniard who best understood indigenous life in the sixteenth century.
These pages take us through a life of legend. From the moment young Álvar, an orphan of noble blood, felt the impulse to leave for the Americas, to his 1527 voyage on a fleet of five ships headed to Florida where, after facing tempests and attacks from the native tribes, ended up shipwrecked on Tampa Bay. Taken prisoner and enslaved by the natives, Álvar managed to escape with just three other companions. And tribe after tribe, he crossed the entire American continent from East to West. An amazing journey on foot that lasted nine years, for which he ended up being revered as a great shaman by the Sioux, the Apache, the Tarahumara, and other peoples, until he found his own and met Hernán Cortés in Mexico City.
This impeccably documented narrative shows the incredible life saga of a rare conquistador, who interacted for years with a multitude of North American ethnic groups. He understood and defended them, pushing for a different way to establish Spanish rule over the New World.
