When the world retreats, rhymes emerge. When life squeezes, verses bloom. This is the legacy of Gloria Fuertes, an essential poet for grappling with love, injustice, yearning and solitude. On the centennial of her birth, with the rising popularity of poetry on social media, this collection cements the reputation of this brave and unique woman.
The volume includes a sampling of Fuertes’ poems for adults – many of them unfairly overlooked – and children, which have received popular, if not always critical, acclaim. Organized and connected according to a sort of (achronological) life map designed by the author, the poems in My Beard Is Growing demonstrate that there weren’t two Glorias, just one, whose work has relevance for everyone.
